About This File

The game features FMVs and rendered cutscenes that get pillarboxed at 21:9 and wider resolutions.
This patcher removes the black bars from the rendered cutscenes and has no effect on the FMVs as there is no way to hack a pre-recorded video to add more content.

Simply unpack the archive and patch the main game exe.

Tested on the latest Steam version at 2560x1080 and briefly at 5760x1080 in both DX modes.

Released

Removed the black bars from another set of cutscenes, as reported in the comments.

Works wonderfully until the end of the Siria's section, the intro of the game, then you get to see pillar box again in 2560*1080 when you see the snow for the second time, when you have to set up a camp. Steam version of the game 😞

Could you share your save file and tell me what to do to reproduce the issue?
Just to clarify though - are we talking about FMVs or cutscenes rendered by the engine in real time?

Hi! I believe they are real time cutscenes, even more when after when it ends, Lara is trying to lit the little bonfire  the scene starts to fade to black, before all else is gone, the side bars disappears revealing the whole scene as the mod did before.

I don't have the save anymore, I kept on playing, but after this part, things kept going normal with the mod, no  pillar box so far and I am at Gulag prision.

I will provide you a save in a short while so you can test for yourself.

OK! The link is here:

The slot 3 save: You will have to jump and grab the thing to make the water flow, then a sequence will start. After the part were Lara hides from the violent water flow the new cutscenes will trigger, then those will have pillar boxes. If you try to skip the cutscnes, you can see the pillar boxes vanishing showing you a brief full screen imagem before everything fades to black and then the game keeps on going to the next part.

The slot 4 save: Almost the same as the 3, but I tried to make a running save to make it faster for you.

The Slot 1 save: My oldest save, I just keep it as a memento.

Slot 2 save: My actual save.

Thank you for reporting the issue and sharing your save files. Save 4 was very helpful in allowing me to go over the cutscene again.
I changed more code and updated the patcher but it's a more drastic change compared to the previous, so it would be helpful if you could restore the original exe and then patch it with the latest version and tell me how it goes as you play, paying attention to the gameplay scaling as well.

I'm attaching the before and after screenshots of the scene, though they are not of one frame.

Thanks, Rose! I will test the new patcher on a back up I have of the .exe 🙂

Hi, do you happen to still have the save archive? I would like to test it in the latest version and update the solution if necessary.

Getting multiple scenes in the early game that I'm pretty sure should be working, but aren't. The black pillarboxes are there but I can faintly see details behind them.

Could you be more specific and include your save file?

I verified files and ran it again, so far no issues but I haven't played much since. I will try to grab a screenshot or video next time I see it. I need to replay the first chapter for some missed collectibles anyways.

I still have the black sidebars as shown in the images even though I used the patch. These are all my save files. My monitor is a 21:9 Samsung 34-inch OLED. My ROTTR is on Steam. If this information helps, please solve my problem. Thanks

Which one of those files should I load to quickly reproduce the issue?

Edit: Loaded your auto save file and corrected that set of cutscenes. Let me know if there's anything else not covered by 1.2.

Great man. The problem has been fixed in most of the cutscenes. Except for these attached images. In the image where Lara is rolling on the snow in the scene there is a black frame on the sides as you can see. But this cutscene is not important I am just afraid that this problem will be repeated in other important cutscenes as I progress in the game. (You can check this by trying save file number 2). And in the other images the problem has been fixed on the right side, but it is still on the left side as shown in the images and this is an important cutscene that should not have black frames on both sides. (You can check the problem by checking save file number 24).

Note: I am recording these scenes by ShadowPlay to use them with Wallpaper Engine. So, I do not want black frames on the sides as they ruin the beauty of the scene.

I would be grateful if you could solve this problem.

It seems I can't load your numbered save files, while lastauto and lastbackup seem to work.

P.S. Not a man.

Save 2 is of the mountain peak with 0% complete, while save 24 is Soviet Installation with 17% and no cutscene in sight. This doesn't look right on my end.

I have completed the game and all the cutscenes are good. As for save number 2, ignore it, it is not important. As for save number 24, you must advance a few steps after Jacob calls Lara, then the cutscene containing the problem will appear.

That is ge_The_Plunge_cine_explosion.bik, a pre-rendered video with transparent parts laid over the real-time rendered cutscene. Even if I managed to stretch it, it wouldn't align with the rest of the content, like the bridge. It could be why the dev pillarboxed all the cutscenes.

I don't really understand all these details especially (pre-rendered video & real-time rendered cutscene), as I think it's a cutscene like any other in the game. Let's assume it's different for any reason, why is the right side without a black bar and the left side with a bar but transparent. I just didn't understand this paragraph. Anyway, if this thing is beyond your ability, I understand. AND We are grateful for everything you have given us.

As you can see in the video inside the small window in my screenshot, the right side of the video is transparent, so you can't see its right edge in the game. The video is in a narrower aspect ratio than yours, hence what you see on the left.

Yes, I get it. I don't know why the developer made this cutscene narrower than the rest. Anyway, I hope the next game SOTTR supports 21:9 even in cutscenes. Otherwise, we will have to bother you again.

Hello. I have RTX 4090 and 3 x 1080p monitors and just tried your patch 1.2 but it did completely nothing to my game, I recorded last few seconds of prerender intro and full first cut scene till game starts.  Please help :)

Assuming no error on your part, here's what esteady1 said regarding a similar issue not long ago:

FYI, I solved it. It is NVIDIA surround problem. This is new (and concerning). Occurring more often these days. I used this patch several years ago and it worked fine in surround. Now surround has to be disabled, and the window stretched across three screen with a borderless app. Then the patcher works.
