The retail copy of Borderlands (2009) uses SecuROM DFA to perform an automatic online-based release date check to prevent pre-release access to the game. The online servers this service relies upon, however, is non-working as of 2019, and this manual tool is required instead. Instructions: These instructions must be performed before the installation of the game is started from the retail disc. 1. Download and run Borderland-ManualReleaseDateCheck.exe from this page. 2. The tool should automatically start up at the "Generate Request File" step and prompt you to save a "ActivationRequest.dfa" file. 3. Click on "Select..." and pick an appropriate location. 4. Click on "Next". The tool should save the activation request file on the desired location and move unto the next step called "Activate License File". Leave this window open for now. 5. Now open SecuROM's official DFA Manual Activation page in a web browser. 6. Click on "Browse..." on the website and select the "ActivationRequest.dfa" file you saved using the tool. 7. Leave the "Serial Number" field empty if your retail copy of Borderlands (2009) didn't come with a serial number (only GOTY-versions did, I believe, and only for the DLCs). 8. Type in the security code, and click on "Submit Query". 9. You should be taken on a new web page that says "Your 'ActivationResponse.lic'-file has been created sucessfully" and give you a link do download said license file. Click on the link to download it. 10. Now go back to the SecuROM tool you left at the "Activate License File" step. 11. Click on "Open..." and select the "ActivationResponse.lic" file that was downloaded from the SecuROM webpage. 12. Click on "Activate". You should get a message about the activation process being successful. Click on "Next" to close down the tool. 13. Finally, proceed with the installation of the retail disc copy of Borderlands from the disc. Sources: * https://support.securom.com/borderlandsdfa/ (non-working upload form, use the generic DFA Manual Activation page linked above instead) * Official download link of the manual release date check tool: http://download.securom.com/support/2k/BorderlandsManualReleaseDateCheck.zip (obtained from https://web.archive.org/web/20140714091342/https://support.securom.com/pop_borderlands.html)

Additional fix for decolayer density change for Sulferon Assault (and other maps with corrupt terrain info's). Possible fix for DirectMusic-related "GetEventTool" crashes. Fixed bug report system sometimes crashing or silently failing due to long URLs. Fixed GetOggDuration crash if “nosound" used. Fix for sound-related crash when exiting some levels with DirectX 9. Performance 10% improvement in golem mesh rendering performance. Fixed unnecessary particle lighting overhead problem. For performance reasons, most carcasses are cleaned up more quickly now. For performance reasons (mainly in marsh) dropped energy rifles are cleaned up after 10 seconds. M08B: improved performance by making sure generator rotating movers only rotate when they are visible. MM_Marsh: added field generator and turret to PreCacheList to avoid hitches when these appear. M12: fixed particle overhead. Added new code/changes to limit overhead due to ragdoll deaths (see "Advanced Tips for Improving Performance" in the readme for details). Fixes Sound fixes. Sunlight fix (flickering in waterfront and potentially other places). MM_Waterfront: fall out of world fix. M12: fixed sun disappearing in opening cutscene with ParticleDensity=0. Also CS_Outro, PA_Acheron, PD_Acheron. Display gamma/brightness/contrast values when changed via F10/F11/F12 keys. Fixed changing actor detail level in-game could result in invisible NPCs (in TutA). Made key bindings delete button more obvious (click on this to delete key bindings). Fix from Jason Yu for bots sometimes not respawning after being killed in botmatches. Added files needed to fix umod support. The umod registry settings will also need to be modified for Unreal II umods to work. We're working on making a separate downloadable installer for this but in the meantime, people who installed the game in the default folder can click on the .reg file in Unreal2Help. Increased crawling spider damage by 3x. Fixed rammers not attacking properly. Fix for Golem references being lost resulting in "invisible" NPCs if game saved/loaded prior to spawning in NPCs which use a mesh which is no longer in the level. Fixed music not playing issue with some levels. Changes for v1403 Added carcass cleanup particle effect. Added support for modifying player movement speed via Unreal2.ini setting (for the duration of the game). For example, to increase the player's movement speed by 50% set PlayerSpeedRatio=1.5 in the [u2GameInfo] section. M08B: fixed trigger that player could avoid. Added 70 and 72 Hz to refresh rates options. Support for scaling the hud / ui to better support multiple monitor setups. This can now be controlled via the ScaleX, ScaleY, OffsetX, - OffsetY properties in the [uI.UIConsole] section in Unreal2.ini. For example, use ScaleX=0.333 and OffsetX=0.333 for three screen support. Added "mouse over" context information for the EAX check box. Warns against enabling EAX on non-Audigy / Audigy 2 cards and warns about possible performance issues. AI for v1403 Mod authors can once again enable script warnings / errors by setting bDisableErrorMessages=false (by default all script warnings / errors are silent). These were completely disabled for RC7 with the intent of re-enabling these for the patch. Note that you have to enable the Component=Console.MessageArea line in UIScriptsUI.ui (remove the ";") to see debug messages in-game. Editor for v1403 Fix for not being able to paint on terrain in editor. Fix for terrain build crash if no terrain map in level. Fixed editor "first run" (UnrealEd.ini added to system folder). Fixed WBrowserStaticMesh::UpdateMenu crash. Fixed crash if you clicked on delete in the decolayer terrain tool, without a decolayer actually being selected. Testing / Stats for v1403 Improved in-game profiling support / logging. Improved in-game stats. Added "stat lock". Other Added Mike Lambert to in-game credits.

Celtic Woad Raiders now move faster (they run faster than Eagle Warriors who lack Squires). Bombard Cannons cause +80 additional damage to buildings. Training time for Teutonic Knights, Longboats, Tarkans, and Samurai is significantly reduced. Cavalry Archers now have equal range to Heavy Cavalry Archers. Scout Cavalry get +2 attack in the Feudal Age. Galleys now take 60 seconds to produce (War Galleys & Galleons still take 45 seconds). Blind Random Map – Multiplayer only. Selects randomly between a number of different map types, and you are not told what kind of map you are playing on. Turbo Random Map — In this mode, all buildings work 2.5 times faster except when building econ units (fishing boats, trade ships & carts, villagers). All economic units gather 2.5 times faster and carry 2.5 times as many resources. All trade units work 2.0 times faster. Villagers construct buildings 2.5 times faster except for castles, towers, & wonders. To play this new Turbo style, select “Turbo Random Map†from the Game Type menu in either single player or multiplayer mode. Custom Random Maps — New ES Custom Maps are in the patch. To select one, go to Map Style and click “Custom.†Note that these maps are NOT guaranteed to work effectively vs. a computer opponent or for certain game types. The computer opponents assume that all Custom maps are Coastal, so a map type that is quite different may hinder the computer opponents’ typical skill level. Also, if you play Regicide on ES@Pilgrims_v2, you do not receive a starting castle. If you play Regicide on ES@Metropolis_v2, you get three kings and three castles. If you have 7-8 players on ES@Pilgrims_v2, some players may instantly resign. The following maps are included. For full descriptions, go to http://www.ensemblestudios.com/aoeiix/docs/rms.shtml. ES@Canals_V2.rms — A network of canals creates a spider web effect as they try to connect every player’s starting town. ES@Capricious_V2.rms — Starting food, gold and stone might be at normal levels, in short supply, or in abundance. Starting trees will always be the same. ES@Dingos_V2.rms — Villagers shepherd their flocks while avoiding rampaging wild animals. Lots of sheep, lots of wolves, no Scout. ES@Graveyards_V2.rms — Control weed-choked graveyards packed with scary trees and abandoned buildings that conceal resources and ancient relics. ES@Metropolis_V2.rms — Control three Town Centers, three sets of villagers, three Scouts and three sets of resources! ES@Moats_V2.rms — Each player’s town is surrounded by a narrow body of water with several land bridges for access and moats narrow enough for ranged units to fire across. ES@Paradise_Island_V2.rms — Start on a tropical island with your enemies. The map is loaded with fish, boars, and berries. Find the three relics at the base of the volcano in the center, but beware of the guardians! ES@Pilgrims_v2.rms — Your starting island may be small, but there is a whole new world to discover! Hop in your Transport and race your enemies to the new world! ES@Prairie_V2.rms — Food is often scarce and there aren’t a lot of natural defenses, but your two Scouts can cover a lot of ground. ES@Seasons_V2.rms — Based on the 4 seasons in a year, with a 25% chance of loading up a Winter map, Spring map, Summer map, or Autumn map. ES@Sherwood_Forest_V2.rms — Multiplayer only. Your town is surrounded by forests, yet you can walk freely through them. Use your hunting wolf to scout the terrain or for sneak attacks on your enemy’s villagers. ES@Sherwood_Heroes_V2.rms — Single player version of Sherwood Forest. Start out with some familiar heroes. ES@Shipwreck_V2.rms — A few bruised villagers and their waterlogged sheep stranded on a desert island. ES@Team_Glaciers_V2.rms — In the frozen north, each team must defend its own hunk of ice and snow against frequent enemy raids. Bad weather makes ships and walls rare, though strangely, this has led to a bumper crop of deer. ES@The_Unknown_V2.rms — Everything is random. Everything. From the moment the game starts, you have to scout (with a random number of Scouts, of course) to figure out whether you are on an island, a mainland, or inside a clearing of trees. Bug Fixes Male Mayan farmers are now as good as females. Imperial Age Houses now have normal house armor. Villagers now walk around farms normally if stopped and started again (the infamous “Farm bugâ€). Monks no longer heal garrisoned units. Computer opponents no longer always switch to attack the opponent with the highest score. That is, they initially attack that opponent, but then they keep attacking for some time afterwards, even if that opponent’s score drops. Teuton Monk Resistance now works properly, so researching Faith is beneficial to them. On Nomad maps, Chinese, Persians, Huns, and Mayans now get the correct starting resources. Computer opponents now build lumber camps next to bamboo. Town centers now always take damage from Bombard Towers. The Team Glaciers map no longer starts players on ice terrain. The Unknown map no longer starts players surrounded by wood. This map was also revised with many small adjustments to resources, relics, and terrain. The Pilgrims map now starts off with a Lumber Camp instead of a Town Center. Extra villagers and resources have been added to player islands as well. In ParadiseIsland, players are no longer automatically defeated after launch of regicide games. Male hunters no longer get +1 LOS. Teuton Town Centers now get their attack bonus. War Wagons no longer get unintended bonus damage vs. siege.
