Why was my D3DWindower upload deleted?

Was any other content I uploaded deleted either? I mainly wanted to know as I don't know if I have access to certain files anymore.

Soeb informed me that Google was flagging the site for possible malware due to positive antivirus detections for D3DWindower, the SimCity 2000 compatibility patcher, and the Transformers: War for Cybertron coalesced tool. I resolved the SimCity 2000 patcher by uploading a pre-patched executable instead, but there was no such alternative for the other two files.

Linking to external sources hosting the affected files appears to be fine for this purpose; the site wasn't flagged back when these three were being linked to externally, and I didn't spot a specific mention of this approach in a quick look at Google's documentation. I linked to an external mirror for D3DWindower for now but I haven't found a suitable one for the Transformers tool.

D3DWindower should be clean, can't a false positive report be sent to Google?

Guys, to avoid such false positives use passwords for archive and publish passwords on download page. I suggest to use standard password as domain name without zone - pcgamingwiki, this will force server-side bots and avs to skip file.

Can't we just pack them differently? I mean, just in simple 7z, tar (..or even rar..) archives. So that the checksum of the file doesn't correspond.

Or does google even scan inside archives hosted on external websites?

Article: D3DWindower

This program allows you to force a windowed mode for games that do not normally have one. This is a fully translated version.

Thanks to the wayback mahine and google cache, I found original descriptions (since downloads were removed, not just hidden -.-)

I'll try to send this to the main AV companies.

Unfortunately no, that is not possible solution. I would be very happy if we could resolve this in a way that wouldn't require removing the files. For now, we have to settle for providing nothing more but external links.

due of dynamic nature of Internet, providing external links instead of local copy may lead to case when external link will die, nobody will have copy anymore, author will vanish from face of earth or will have no source or interest anymore, and fix will die.

I think it a vital requirement for FUTURE PROOF PC GAMING, to have every tool and patched mirrored here.

That is one of our long term goals. That being said, many files are too big to fit on our servers and/or they may be still under active development (no use mirroring outdated files).

While it would be nice to host all possible patches and tools, it will not be realized for at least a couple of years. The best that can be done is give the external links and mirror the files when possible (or needed).

Actually (uploading issues aside), maximum file size is 4GB... so I don't see this as a problem.

Nevertheless, whoever deleted those files, could have just hidden them

I didn't know at the time that deleting a file is permanent and does not put it in the moderation archive (as with deleted topics/posts). In the future I will hide affected files.

  • 1 year later...

I forgot all about this--I had mirrored it because the Xentax DropBox link went down. For now I've hidden the file and replaced the wiki link with one to FilePlanet (although from memory this is not a fully translated version).

I have reported the false positive to the vendors that are showing detections for the ZIP on VirusTotal, so hopefully they will sort this out soon.

I'm not sure if I uploaded a Saints Row 3 mod recently, I remember having issues with the file type and had to compress for no reason because PCGW didn't accept the file. I don't see the upload on my profile or in recent files, can someone check?

See Mars icecream's Content. The file wasn't approved, I've done that now.

If you don't see a file approved within a day or so it may have been missed (ask a mod/admin to see what's happening with it).

Is archiving all smaller mod files/game fixes PCGW's goal? That mod was uploaded to Dropbox, they often take popular files down. I understand that you don't necessarily want to host files in several gigabytes, but don't know where to draw the line.
