Suicide machine

Avoiding Filefront.

Recommended Posts

Actually, I was thinking about tickling this subject a few months back, but for some reason I didn't - I guess, I was just new and I didn't feel confident enough. Anyway, I'd like to stop PCGW contributors from linking files from Filefront.

I guess, many people may not be aware, but for me - filefront is always an issue. Every time, I want to download a file that is on Filefront, I get an error that file doesn't exist. For a while, I've been thinking - this actually may be a case... until I started doing some research. Turns out, the problems isn't file not being on a server, any more, but a simple denial of access to files in certain regions - this includes Poland and Italy for example.

Can I download Game Front files from any territory in the world?
A: Game Front file downloads are not supported in all territories. Below is the list of all of the countries that can download from Game Front. If you’re not in one of the below territories then, unfortunately, you will be unable to download files from our site. (...)

Yes, a lot of it is my frustration. But this problem has been present for over a year now and Filefront didn't seem to take any steps to fix the problem (which is a shame, since a lot of people used to put maps and their fixes in there). What is especially frustrating is that they didn't even bother to put some kind of note that it's because region - all you get is "file doesn't exist" error message. And you're left in the dark with a wrong error message.

So, I'd strongly recommend and ask all contributors to avoid linking files from filefront, so that anyone can easily download a fix/mod/hack or whatever it's necessary.

I've been gradually migrating links away from FileFront/GameFront because of this problem. All such links should eventually be eliminated; the same goes for any other region-locked download services (I don't know of any others off-hand).

For reference, here are all remaining links to these sites: gamefront.com, filefront.com.

I think games that have Nexus Mod Manager support shouldn't have their Nexus exclusive mods put on the PCGW Files because downloading from a Nexus site with Nexus Mod Manager is so easy and simple.

I think we should cross-host these as well, just in case the Nexus site were ever to close or the user were to delete the file. We would leave links for both the Nexus site as well as our own rehost.

I'm not sure if we would be allowed to rehost them if they were Nexus-exclusive, however.

The Nexus network isn't closing any time soon, but it does have some server issues which make the Nexus sites pretty slow, so that's a good idea, but I am spoiled way too much with Nexus Mod Manager.

So after countless days of uploading and research, all downloads currently linked to in this wiki no longer point to Filefront!

That being said, there is still much work left to be done. Links to Gamefront and FilePlanet still need to be added to the Files section.

For transporting purposes you can easily download the files from filefront by using a VPN or a proxy. If there is a list of files that needs to be uploaded to the pcgw server, I can help.

So I just found out that FilePlanet (as far as I can tell) is officially dead. Almost every download link I come across returns a "403 Forbidden" or "404" error.

Basically, a small but sizeable chunk of our file links just died overnight.

I think moving all our FilePlanet links should be high priority. At least with Gamefront links they can still be accessed.

The good news is that Gamefront has (for the most part) the same files as FilePlanet, so replacing common files should be easy. For the more obscure files, the Internet Archive has managed to archive all the files available from FilePlanet into a collection of massive TAR files (link) where the files can be downloaded individually.

EDIT: Nevermind, Garrett was right.

This FilePlanet problem seems to be some temporary issue at their end; forcing a refresh (Ctrl+F5) makes links work again after a few attempts.

FilePlanet links that are dead forever (and have been for years) show a Mario 404 error instead.

FilePlanet stuff always worked fine for me but yeh quickly get them up if possible. I've also recently uploaded a giant mod pack for Spore including 450 mods, is that fine? Seeing as in the future these mods will be almost unobtainable, most of them already having completely dead links.

Sure it is fine. It would be great if you list what is inside those 450 Mods and if it is separate it would be best to upload it separately.

Wouldn't general mods be more "appreciated" on a dedicated website? I mean.. if they don't fix anything I guess the best place would be moddb or nexusmod

ps:i'm back
