Deus Ex: Mankind Divided & GOG Galaxy DRM

Recommended Posts

The GOG release of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided uses GOG Galaxy as a form of DRM (detailed here: https://predb.pw/x.php?type=nfo&id=YXFMU3psR0Z2Q0dWdTc4NFZ1S1BBQ0hzYUpCSklIdlZiWWtWamhiY1AyUT0= and functionally described here: https://www.gog.com/forum/deus_ex_mankind_divided/game_is_missing_the_outfitweapon_dlcs/post47). I have updated the wiki page with this info, but was unsure whether or not to change the DRM status of the GOG entry in the availability table, as it is something that (as far as I know) only affects the DLC, and not the base game, and, beyond that, there is no icon available for games that use Galaxy as DRM. While this is the first case of it happening in a single player game, I feel it is misleading to not also list it for the many games that require Galaxy for online play (incomplete list here: https://www.gog.com/forum/general/lists_games_that_need_galaxy_for_multiplayer_and_the_ones_that_dont/page1), as it is a form of DRM, and thus should already be an option.

Thanks for adding the information to the page.

There is a "GOG Galaxy" icon that can be used in the availability table which another user added shortly after your edit, although it normally isn't used. Up until today there's only two games that makes use of said "DRM": this game as well as Gwent: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/User:Aemony/Sandbox/List_of_GOG_Galaxy_games

I'd probably prefer a DRM-freeicon instead with a wildcard to indicate there's some specific concerns regarding the supposed DRM-free nature of games, as we're using for e.g. Half-Life 2 on the Steam row: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Half-Life_2

A "DRM-free*" label would also allow us to categorize the "for-multiplayer-only" titles as well.

From what I can tell, the DRM-free* icon only appears when using the DRM-free label with a steam game (for example, on that HL2 page, the retail section has  "Steam, DRM-free" in the DRM section, and the steam section has "DRM-free", but only the steam one shows with the asterisk. Additionally, changing just the store for the HL2 section (i.e. to GOG), also changes the icon to the normal DRM-free icon).

Yes, that’s how we implemented it at the time. To minimize disruption, the new option would, if implemented, require specifically writing DRM-free* in the GOG row for it to appear. Just typing “DRM-free” would work as it does today, basically.

I’ve brought it up with other staff members on the Discord server and we’ll see where the discussion leads us.
