Andytizer 269 Share Posted August 19, 2013 The final nail in the coffin is revealed on the Age of Empires Online support page which states that Games for Windows Live will close July 1, 2014. However the page seems to have been edited around an hour after it was discovered and the information is no longer there. Luckily I caught the full screenshot here: Download attachment: AOEO2.jpg A NeoGAF user has posted a list of affected games that will be unavailable for purchase anywhere after the Games for Windows Marketplace closes on August 25, 2013 as well as those affected in some way by the service closure on July 1, 2014. Andytizer 269 Author Share Posted August 19, 2013 I wonder what this means for other GFWL games, e.g. Dark Souls, Fallout 3, etc. there's been no word on this yet.

Suicide machine 53 Share Posted August 19, 2013 So that's why we've seen these few games moving to SteamWorks. My biggest concern is that games like Dark Souls won't be patched to use Steamworks and as a result, we won't be able to play them online past July 2014. I'm not really concerned about Fallout 3 and other singleplayer games - I won't mind cracking them, if this is going to be necessary. Oh, also, maybe we should add notes to GFWL titles, that weren't patched that playing this game may be impossible after July 2014 - so that people, who games and go look to PCGW before buying to check if a game supports widescreens etc. were aware of that? Oh, and sorry.... I could have just edit the post.
Pridit 39 Share Posted August 19, 2013 GFWL has been a pain ever since it was first introduced, it's long overdue and I'm glad it's going to shut down. It was bloated and caused nothing but hassle for me each and every time I was forced to use it, here's hoping all if not most of the games that use GFWL patch it out. Andytizer 269 Author Share Posted August 20, 2013 I think that PCGamingWiki will most likely become an even more important hub for storing information on how to keep these games alive once GFWL disappears. I reckon we'll see renewed development in 'GFWL-removal' tools.

I think it's best to wait until closer to that date. Some games are apparently being updated to use Steamworks (e.g. BioShock 2, Batman: Arkham City and Batman Arkham Asylum) so at least some cases will be resolved long before the deadline. Vacilastana 0 Share Posted August 27, 2013 I wonder what happens to Grand Theft Auto IV, does its multiplayer become unplayable?
Nicereddy 109 Share Posted August 27, 2013 I wonder what happens to Grand Theft Auto IV, does its multiplayer become unplayable? Multiplayer mods will likely come out if Rockstar doesn't do anything, but yes it will likely become unplayable for multiplayer.
