Steam Remote Play now available

The latest Steam update has enabled 'Steam Remote Play' which is the new name for 'In-Home Streaming' which now works outside the home. Here are the details:

In-Home Streaming (AKA Steam Remote Play)

• Steam In-Home Streaming is experimentally available outside the home, and is now known as Steam Remote Play. Your Steam clients can now stream games from each other wherever they are, as long as there is a good network connection on both sides and they are close to a Steam datacenter
• In-Home Streaming settings have been renamed Remote Play settings
• Paired Steam Link devices now show up in the Remote Play settings
• You can now remove all paired Steam Link devices
• Fixed the PC to PC streaming client hanging when you alt-tab away from it
• Added a network status icon to indicate that the network connection is slow.

Streaming games from your PC to outside the home was always possible using aplications like Moonlight or even setting up a VPN with Steam's In-Home Streaming. However this new update makes everything work natively with remote devices including Steam installed on PCs or Steam Link mobile app for iOS and Android.

I haven't tried this yet over the Internet, but hopefully it will be able to compete with the alternatives like Parsec (<3) or Rainway.

I have tried internet desktop streaming before and have decent upload speed (12Mbps) but it doesn’t seem that appealing to play PC games remotely with latency on a smaller screen. 

I wonder if Steam will ever pivot and offer a full streaming service like Stadia or a virtual desktop server you could log into. They certainly have the games and the infrastructure to be able to pull off something like that.

You should try Parsec out. Even when bouncing the input longer than the length of Sweden, the latency is almost nil; although this comes at the cost of extreme video compression.

But still quite promising.
