Localizations

I've added Arabic support. Any other languages will be added as soon as they're known about, even if only one game has it.

With Botanicula I bumped to "Slovak" and "Botulo". Botulo is in-game language so I'll just add note about that but Slovak should be real life language unless I'm horribly mistaken.

Slovak is a real language but there is not really many games that have Slovak language in it. Even if they had, its not really relevant since most Slovakians use Czech or English language in games.

Could the fan parameter replace the main icons with a different icon instead please (text, audio, and cc, separate choises for all of them)

 

Having a simple text seems meaningless, seeing as I might as well just write it myself, and it only seems to clutter things up.

 

It would be cool if we'd be able to pick between true, false, fan and hackable, the rest of the fan settings which are currently present could be removed.

 

Fan = fan made translations

Hackable = mods related to audio stuff or whatever you can think off

 

The template right now feels a bit incomplete without these two.

So I just come from ace combat assault horizon free weekend.. and I felt like Italian dubbing was a complete mess... False accent, some errors with squadron names (italian equivalent for "bear" instead of the original english name) and so on
This also made me remember of that time I tried to dump english voices in half life 2 and episode 1 (the last valve game to have non-English voices afaik)... worst idea ever... they were the most robotic, unreal and wrong I have ever heard (especially Alyx one)
But thanks god (I don't know why) steam preferred to download english files that time..

Anyway the question was: would this be something intrinsically too unprofessional to be noted in the notes?

I mean.. Of course not with all translations.. just with those objectively and very far crappy
Or even with those objectively awesome. Mafia 1 italian dubbing or Metro 2033 russian one are the first that come to my mind

on a side note.. would it be finally possible to implement hackable property in the localizations table with the new mediawiki update?

I can definitly feel you with lousy translations. Not only voice acting, especially with languages which usually aren't translated some game words don't have the corresponding words so usually translators make up their own which makes sense and with some cases fail hard. Number one reason I hate uplay is because finnish translation is simply unusable. I have no idea what anything means unless I change to english or if I do then translation is so bad I'm facepalming myself. 

 

Thing is how do you judge those thing objectively? Even if it's clear to you that it's worst thing ever some other may prefer it. Especially with something like metro thing even if russian language is better some will think english dub is better.

What do you think a fan icon would look like? I could just do "FAN" in a circle, but that isn't exactly preferable. I'm also not sure about the logistics of adding this, any thoughts Soeb?

This was never a technological limitation, but rather a design decision. There's no place in the table where hackable would make sense.

 

Would all three values need to be set to hackable? Or just one? How would the wiki then decide whether the language is official or a fan translation? This would complicate the whole table immensely, both from the implementation side (also known as "the crap that I deal with"), and it would make it harder at a glance to decide for a new editor on how this should be used.

 

If you can propose a reasonable solution, and ideally, implement it yourself, then this can be looked at again.

We must been thinking to different things. If the localization is official, as in "you install the game and it's there", then it's simply true

If otherwise it's fan made.. it's hackable. And of course only the things implemented by "fans" should be hackable, otherwise just false (things as in: UI, CC, voices)

I don't think wiki would have problem in this way

 

Then I guess you were thinking to the lots of east european specific editions of games which come with "exclusive" translations (for example I often see Polish localization released only for polish retail stores)... but I think these should be true too.. Even though you usually can still "hack" them into EFIGS version (we could host those archive btw), the basic fact doesn't change: they are released by the developer

 

About the rest, it might be interesting to take a look at games that force the player to have subtitles and audio in the same language. I'm sure there's a lot of people that want to play with the original, usually higher quality voice acting, but with subtitles in their language so they can understand the game much better.

100% endorsed. Besides subtitles/captions and voices I would even look for independent interface/menus too though

Mhh well, in the half life 2 case..

I heard the opinion of more than 20 people and they all agree on the crappyness of the work. Still, truth is not decided by the majority and technically yes it would be somewhat impossible to "test" as we do with, for example antialiasing or v-sync

 

Anyway I'd like to go a bit OT: speaking of metro I actually tried 3 dubbing, ita, eng and rus.

While the first was plain (not bad, not good) the second was really well made.. But then I tried the last and man.. you could truly feel the harshness of the world... but I don't know... of course this is not something I could really explain

With Netherlands I'm not sure as Dutch should be their official language, however game lists both Dutch and Netherlands as options.

I added Catalan, Croatian, Galician, Macedonian and Slovenian (Slovene). It seems to me that "Netherlands" is just a mistake of someone meaning to mark it as Dutch, but if you find a reason to believe otherwise we can see about it.

Now that I looked closer it's definitly mistake and it's Dutch. Thanks for adding other languages!
