'Proprietary' as a negative in software articles

Why I have this sensation nobody has given even half of a damn to my post? :|

And SERIOUSLY we should have a list of blacklisted software, including but not limited to: utorrent, FRAPS, motionjoy, winrar... and xpadder. Oh, and Internet Explorer for Soeb's sake.

If you're going to list "non-free" as a con, why restrict it to non-game software?

I do not think licences are relevant to this wiki's purpose, anyway.

I agree with this however. Some programs should be avoided, especially given the available alternatives.

FRAPS is fine (for screenshots, I would prefer a free alternative though, I don't know any other utilties on Windows which can inject themselves into DirectX games), but the rest can go to hell.

If someone has a better alternative than FRAPS, which works anywhere then cool.

I do believe this is a site for PC Gaming specific resources and one would assume by default that the purpose is to provide information, fixes etc and not partake in any kind of agenda like FOSS or anti-FOSS or an inherent bias towards either.

Something that actually affects players, like an intrusive online DRM that they aren't willing to put up with is a negative. Something that doesn't align with your own preference/philosophy is not.

VLC is pretty good "get videos working with minimal effort in single package without codec hasshle" but it's still the most hated program with some enthusiastic groups for several good reasons.

With " enthusiastic groups" you mean people who get compressed anime flicks from torrent sites I assume? MadVR rendered may offer superior image quality, but it's a pain to install and requires a lot of processing power.

I watch some DVDs and will expand to Blu-rays in the future, for me VLC is extremely useful as it can break DVD copy protection easily on all operating systems (disk in and play), as far as I'm aware there's not an easier method available at least for Windows.

lol why did you bump this

I use MPC-HC, WinRAR, uTorrent and Chrome BTW :)

( also nothing to hide here :^) )

I'm 90% sure you're using a cracked copy on WinRAR, paying for the program would be somewhat stupid: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/winrar-winzip-7-zip-magicrar,3436-13.html

But each to their own, I wouldn't be surprised if that uTorrent (Pro?) is fetched from torrent sites also.

That's why there are codec packs for dumbs (I mean, actual sane codec packs, not jumble like k-lite)

And I think that in 2016 there's more than enough spare processing power for this kind of stuff (even though, VLC is indeed more heavy than vanilla mpc)

Then, both libbluray and libdvdcss are hosted by VLC guys, but I'm pretty sure mpc-hc use them too. The only difference should be the later has no support for java menus.

For the remainder 7-zip > winrar, qbittorrent > utorrent, and at least me prefer firefox.

The difference is that the VLC Windows build ships with libdvdcss and plays encrypted DVDs out of the box. Don't know about Blu-rays.
