Call of Duty: World at War - Online multiplayer/co-op profile creation problem

Can't create a new online profile in CoD: World at War since it redirects to this message:

Sadly the Steam version’s online functionality is broken. All new copies sold after 2025 have invalid registration keys, which prevents newer players from creating an online profile.

Apparently this isn’t the first time it’s happened either. I dug around for some info and it looks like the Steam version ran out of valid keys back in 2022 before it was fixed in 2023. It recently ran out of keys again in 2025. It’s unknown if they’ll ever fix it this time, and even if so... I don’t know whether previously purchased copies with invalid keys would be made valid retroactively or whether it only applies to newly purchased copies. I couldn’t find any info about this from the last time it happened.

For now, the best way to get online functionality working again on Steam is to use the Plutonium client. There’s another method that involves buying a pre-2021 registration key from the retail version and using Registry Editor to make the Steam version use that key, but it’s pretty convoluted and you’d just be buying the game twice.
