Could use something like that.

What would this be used for? I'm not sure what you're thinking of off-hand.

For stuff such as bin\release\the executable.exe, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be used too often. I don't really know how to explain it right now.

Path to steam, game, etc. is usually used withing save and configuration paths. Of course it would be nice to have that if ever needed, but if this would be needed software related articles, it's most likely withing fixbox where you can simply write "navigate to program installation folder".

I ment like, nested paths? I think that's the word. Such as <path-to-software>\bin\win32\anotherFolder\moreFolder\Foldeeeerrr\Yay.exe

"Navigate to program installation folder" sucked, and that's why we uses path to game even there now.

Said this, it should just be about template:path displaying whatever you wrote when it can't recognize the argument.

If such uses are necessary the current game variable could be renamed to be more generic (<installation-folder> or something). Support for a custom parameter isn't likely since this template was introduced to provide standardised naming.

The thing is especially useful when talking of other programs.

Especially I remember I had to manually write <path-to-uplay> some time ago.

Now that's there, but I'm not really sure there aren't other corner cases, like origin or yuplay, or something else.

I still haven't seen a valid reason to add <path-to-software> mentioned in this thread. Could someone please clarify, ideally with an example of a game, of where it would be used?

This is not about games, it's about software, like FRAPS or whatever.

Not all software executables are located in the main installation folder, as such "navigate to the main installation path" doesn't work too well with multiple nested folders.

Instead it would be nice to have something like this.

<path-to-whatever>\firstFolder\secondFolder\yourSoftware.exe

I'm not sure what other examples to post, it's as simple as that, a more generic template for non-game related paths. I don't see what's wrong with telling users where the exact .exe is located, and I don't see why I should write incomplete instructions, I thought the whole point of the wiki was to make things easy for everyone and keep things clear. Even more advanced users should be able to not have to deal with such headaches, but that doesn't mean that less experienced users shouldn't have to benefit from this stuff, I might have some bad days where I might get annoyed and I might not be bothered to explain something but in the end I don't mind to explain how to do anything really.

I genuinely don't know what else to post right now, I felt as if the other posts made it pretty clear. v.png Right now I've kinda ran out of ideas so I'm not sure.

Mirh said he'd like to be able to input his own paths into the template, but things would get a bit inconsistent.

I'd say dynamic rather than inconsistent.

I mean, it's just for corner cases of fixed arguments.

I can see a sense for origin, uplay, steam.. but I don't think it would be possible to make a special case for everything.

I don't think anyone would be able to stick to one style if <path-to-custom> was used.
