Valve announces Steam Reviews

Andytizer
  • Valve has just announced Steam Reviews, a new service that allows Steam users to write, publish and share their reviews of Steam games.

Steam Review scores will be shown alongside Metacritic scores on the actual game store page:

Q. Does this replace Metacritic scores on games?

A. These reviews will be offered as additional data. Both Metacritic scores and Steam Reviews will be visible on store pages for both games and software.

Interestingly, unlike on Steam Discussions, developers won't be able to directly censor user's written content about their game:

Q. I'm a developer. Can I delete reviews of my product?

A. Not directly. If you find abusive or offensive reviews written about your product, you can flag it as spam/abuse. The review will continue to be listed on your store page, but in a collapsed form and marked as spam until a moderator can either delete the review or remove the spam flag.

Developers will be able to respond to reviews and also have the power to mark as abuse or spam:

Q. I'm a game developer. Can I respond to reviews?

A. Yes, when you post in the comments of reviews on your product, your comment will be flagged as being from the developer.

Q. Can I report abusive reviews?

A. Yes, similar to other content shared on Steam, each review will have a 'flag' button to report offensive content or spam.

We sincerely hope that Steam Reviews aren't abused and don't degenerate into the realms of Metacritic user scores or poor Amazon product reviews.

More information about Steam Reviews can be found on this page.

With 1-2,000 games it looks like I need to start turning my 9 recommendations  into a Review for all the games I own.  Its going to be quite a long task.

I'm happy with this update,  it'll be nice to get some crowdsourced info but it'll have its pros and cons  just like metacritic and  paid reviews do already.
