About This File

------------------------------------------
·"Zork Grand Inquisitor" (CD-Win95 version) Patch-Fix:
------------------------------------------

-This Patch-Fix is ONLY for the original 2-CD versions of the game.

-The patch adds some enhanced videos (from DVD version) to all CD localized versions of the game without changing the original language.

-Has some fixes from the patch version 1.1 (the latest version of the game) but without the extra 20 savegames as this causes crashes on modern Windows.

-Improves Windows 10/11 compatibility with DDraw-wrapper (cnc-ddraw for video) and uses a Win95 executable to run.

-*Warning Note: I played it back in the day and the rotation movement was slower than in Zork Nemesis; that doesn't happen in ScummVM, but this Patch-Fix is to recover the "original" version as it was played; the game was like that.
If you want, the game can be played with ScummVM (but keep disabled the option "Use original save/load screens", because if active causes bugs/crashes with my Patch-Fix, and does not work properly). I prefer to play this game without ScummVM (if possible) because you need to change options in ScummVM and I like a "direct way to play".

*Special Note: The 2-CD version of Zork Grand Inquisitor was released in 1997 with more languages than just the original English (the only one currently available). I can confirm the existence of Spanish, French and German versions. The DVD version is ONLY available in English. All 2-CD versions have the same file structure, and all come with voices and texts localized, but the subtitles are only available in "English".

--------------------------------------------------------
-- Before installing this Patch-Fix you MUST do this: --
--------------------------------------------------------

---
-ONLY for the 2-CD version:
---

· Create a folder like 'C:\Zork Grand Inquisitor Game' (you can change this folder and HD letter) and copy into it HELP, ZGI and ZASSETS1 from CD1, and ZASSETS2 from CD2.

· Once you have copied ZGI folder, you need to enter into it and copy to 'C:\Zork Grand Inquisitor Game' the next folders: ANET, TAUNTS, ZGI_MX and you must also move all loose files (All files inside ZGI folder). After that, (OPTIONAL) you can delete the following folders within ZGI: ANET, TAUNTS and also all loose files, but first put them inside the main folder: 'C:\Zork Grand Inquisitor Game'.

· Important note: ZGI contains a file called "ZKEYS.INI". This file is used to configure localized keybindings. Without this file, the game defaults to English keybindings, so when the program says "Exit," you will need to press "Y" (for "yes") to exit, although this may vary depending on your regional settings.

· Once you have copied ZGI_MX to the default folder: 'C:\Zork Grand Inquisitor Game', you need to do:
1.- Enter inside ZGI_MX folder and also enter in MINMAX folder, once in this last folder, copy all files to ZGI_MX.
(Optional or only if you want to do this manual) 2.- You need to change the extension of all "*.SRC" files to "*.RAW" inside ZGI_MX folder.

· Once all 2-CD data is installed as said above you can install the Patch-Fix files.

*Note: after install my Patch-Fix you must enter inside ZGI_MX folder and execute my batch file to automatically convert all "*.SRC" files to "*.RAW".

---
My Batch, named "Convert to RAW.bat" contains the next instructions:

REM - This converts all *.SRC files to *.RAW files.
Pause
REN *.SRC *.RAW
Pause
---

With this done, all the music and localized voices will appear correctly once the game is running. The videos have their audio files (localized) inside and all videos use the old DUCK video format (now deprecated and really difficult to re-convert), like happens with Zork Nemesis.

*Note: the videos this Patch-Fix updates does not have localized voices, for that reason work well with any version of Zork Grand Inquisitor.

---
To play the game:

Now the game will be launched with the file "zgiwin.exe".

And you will play "Zork Grand Inquisitor" (Win95 version), with a lot of enhanced videos.
---

-The patch adds "winhlp32.exe", inside HELP folder, that allows the capacity to read the old help files of the game (because Windows 10/11 are unable to read them), with all the "*.hlp" files being inside HELP folder.

---
· Extra: if you press "Control" + "Q" the exit menu appears even in videos.
INQUIS.TXT has information about INQUIS.INI file.
---

-Credits:

· Activision for update the game (for Win95 CD version) to version 1.1 of Zork Grand Inquisitor. My Patch-Fix does not add 20 additional saved games and uses the executable prior to the patch because the patched executable introduces errors that will cause crashes with modern versions of Windows (10 and 11).

· cnc-ddraw: I modified the "ddraw.ini" to play "Zork Grand Inquisitor" at 25 FPS, like when it was launched in 1997 with Windows 95.
