phas0r 0 Share Posted October 25, 2025 I tried to use this mod here: I'm on a fresh install of Windows 11, and I'm trying to get Harry Potter 1 to work with this renderer. The game was already working, but looked pretty bad, before I tried to get this renderer to work. I followed the instructions from the readme carefully, but when I launch the game I get this error: What does this mean?? I can't find anything online with this exact problem. There were people that reported similar errors for Unreal, but so far I didn't find anyone reporting a clear solution. It seems like it has to do with MS Visual Studio somehow? Also, the details of this error message make no sense. The path of C:\HPBuild\... doesn't even exist. There's no HPBuild folder in C:\, or anywhere else, I think. I would really, really love some help. This is very frustrating and exhausting. PS: In case anyone else out there is Googling/searching this error, here's the error text, for the search engine: Assertion failed: RenDev [File:C:\HPBuild\WinDrv\Src\WinViewport.cpp] [Line: 342] History: UWindowsViewport::OpenWindow <- UGameEngine::Init <- InitEngine Reply (Quote)
Blackbird 55 Share Posted October 25, 2025 Please don't post any mentions and especially link to pirated content. I have removed the references for now, but consider this formal warning. Reply (Quote)

Unfortunately abandonware is not legal term is still considered piracy despite how silly it is considering the game is unobtainable. phas0r 0 Author Share Posted October 26, 2025 Ok it looks like I figured it out. I believe this problem only occurred when using the Philosopher's Stone version of this game, rather than the Sorcerer's Stone (US) version. Applying the mods to the US version didn't cause any crashes. However, a different problem occurred. Every mod that I tried to use resulted in the game having no sound at all. Sound works in the original game without any mods on my system (but only after setting HP.exe to compatibility mode with one of the earlier Windows). The disappearing sound happened on the DX9 renderer and the DX11 renderer, listed here (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone - PCGamingWiki PCGW - bugs, fixes, crashes, mods, guides and improvements for every PC game), and on dgVoodoo (dgVoodoo Tutorial – Play Old PC Games).
