Have you tried this fix?

I know its not specifically for this game, but it does add back DirectMusic related .dlls into newer versions of Windows, so it might work.

Thanks, it worked. Played half of the first game without music. Sad.

Although it's not intended for this game, it might work because it restores DirectMusic-related.dlls to more recent Windows versions.

Hi!

Which version I'm supposed to use? X64 because my OS is X64, or X86 because the game is X86?

Also the install instructions are very unclear. There's a system32 and syswow folder for x64. The latter is not even mentioned. There's a script in the reg keys folders as well, also there are two registry key folders. Also I can't take ownership of the dll files in system32.

Also the dll files that do appear seem to be linked from somewhere else.

PS:
Why does my profile show up as new with zero posts? I posted here years ago, and my login info was stored in the password manager.

If you have 64bit Windows, you should use the 64 version, just in case (it actually has both 64 and 32 bit dlls, so it should work for anything). Also keep in mind that on 64 bit, Syswow64 is actually for 32 bit files and system32 is for 64 bit (it's confusing, but Microsoft designed it so for some technical reason).

However, the installation of the fix is more complicated on Windows 11 because the DM_FIX.cmd uses some outdated commands and doesn't work properly, so you have to manually take ownership of Windows' existing files in the system folders or use a tool like PowerRun which allows you to open an Explorer window with TrustedInstaller privileges (allowing you to simply copy and paste the files). Be sure to backup the original dlls when doing this. After you copied the files (again, 32 bit ones go in syswow64 and 64 bit ones in system32, apps will automatically find the right ones if they're installed properly), you should run the runme.bat files in both the 32 and 64 registry key folders in the fix (preferably through a command line opened via Powerrun to ensure that they get proper premissions). Again, it's a good idea to make a registry backup too before doing this.

Actually all sets of dlls are bit identical. (Two in the 64 bit version and one in the other.)

Anyway, I copied them in both places. Executed both RUNME.BAT files. Not sure if it works though. I don't know how to verify.
(The instructions are definitely wrong for the most/all points. Such as the way described to run the .reg files.)

I don't want it for the game though. I wanted to rip its music, but directmusic software don't seem to work nowadays. So far it didn't help sgt2wav and direct music producer still can't seem to export to wav. I just wish I knew whether I was unsuccessful installing this package or it's just not enough.

(And for the life of me, I can't find out why the "ambush" music doesn't work with any software outside the game itself.)
