What free games are worth it?

Recommended Posts

STALKER: Anomaly or STALKER:Call of Chernobyl are probably the only free games I've invested more than 500 hours in. Albeit they are mods of Stalker:Call of Pripyat, they are standalone by themselves.

Other than that, any and all free games out there (including popular ones like Path of Exile) sooner or later end up with paywalls, shading trading business within the game or boring after the first few hours (e.g. I got bored with Team Fortress 2 after 40 hours).

But I have to ask though: Can't you see a review, download a demo or just plain watch a gameplay video of a game to get the gist of it before you buy it? What makes the purchase of a game always being regrettable? I've bought way too many games on GOG and never regretted a single thing I've bought.

Khimera: Destroy All Monster Girls is a fun game if you enjoy games similar to Shantae or Shovel Knight with a bit of Kirby or Mega Man thrown into the mix.

Chester Classic is a game I had previous experience on Xbox 360 when it was on their Xbox LIVE Indie Games section, it's like a mash-up and tribute to odd action side-scrollers like Earthworm Jim with various "Chesters" you can play as parodying various classic video games. This particular version was an enhanced version of the XBLIG version but it was recently re-released as freeware on PC some time ago as the developer is working on a new Unity remake under the name of Chester One.

Tyrian 2000 is definitely a classic shoot 'em up with lots of weapons and modes to play around with, and the story mode is really cool. GOG has the 2000 version pre-packaged with DOSBox in an easy-to-play package, though there's the OpenTyrian port too though I don't see much development for that port and it's based on the older versions of Tyrian.

By "free" do you mean commercial games that I got for free on various stores, free-to-play games, or real freeware games like Knytt Stories, Seal Hunter, Super Tux Kart, etc... ?
