  1. Update:

As of today (June 20th, 2019) issue with Zombie servers seems to have been resolved, allowing players once again to log into a Zombie lobbies and play it in both Solo and Multiplayer modes.

    Original story:

    cod-rezurrection-Shi-No-Numa-scr2-56ab9c005f9b58b7d009c6fb.jpg

Multiple reports show that Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 multiplayer servers - specifically the Zombies servers run by Activision, have not been functioning for over 3 days. PC gamers attempted to connect to Zombies (singleplayer and multiplayer) are met with this screen:

    42700_20190613231418_1.png

Steam Discussions show frustrated gamers without any official response from Activision or Treyarch. Various threads on /r/pcgaming and the /r/CoDZombies confirm that there is an issue with no official responses within those threads.

Activision have only responded by sending generic tweet responses claiming that they are "investigating". Gamers have also been tweeting @pcdev, Activision's Director of Development who simply forwards the issue to the developers.

The chilled response from Activision/Treyarch is not surprising, given that Call of Duty: Black Ops was released in 2010, making the game 9 years old. Commenters are suspicious that Activison have shut down the servers intentionally to make way for their newer games, but failed to communicate this to the playerbase. This 9 year old game, especially the PC community within it, are clearly not a priority for Activision who are not scrambling over themselves to fix or respond to this issue. Thisis clearly shown on the status page of Activision's online services, where the Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 isn't even listed as a game to select (even though it is being sold on Steam). The status page even shows that all lights are green on the Windows front despite the Zombies servers being down for 3 days.

    blops.jpg

Standard multiplayer is not affected, as Call of Duty: Black Ops uses community dedicated servers to run as normal:
    42710_20190613232059_1.jpg

It is still possible to play the Zombies mode offline.

We await any substantial official response from Activision/Treyarch.

The latest Steam update has enabled 'Steam Remote Play' which is the new name for 'In-Home Streaming' which now works outside the home. Here are the details:

    Quote

In-Home Streaming (AKA Steam Remote Play)

    • Steam In-Home Streaming is experimentally available outside the home, and is now known as Steam Remote Play. Your Steam clients can now stream games from each other wherever they are, as long as there is a good network connection on both sides and they are close to a Steam datacenter
    • In-Home Streaming settings have been renamed Remote Play settings
    • Paired Steam Link devices now show up in the Remote Play settings
    • You can now remove all paired Steam Link devices
    • Fixed the PC to PC streaming client hanging when you alt-tab away from it
    • Added a network status icon to indicate that the network connection is slow.

Streaming games from your PC to outside the home was always possible using aplications like Moonlight or even setting up a VPN with Steam's In-Home Streaming. However this new update makes everything work natively with remote devices including Steam installed on PCs or Steam Link mobile app for iOS and Android.

  3. I have been trying from the beginning and I have yet to be able to install Metro Exodus from the Microsoft Store at all - I keep receiving the error code 0x80070005. I have tried updating Windows, Xbox app, running in admin mode etc, but can't get it to install at all. Other games like Gears of War 4 install just fine. Still very frustrating, as I bought Xbox Game Pass PC Games specifically to test Metro Exodus out.

Who knew that a shared love of bees, honey and mead could settle combative lawsuits between game companies? That's exactly what happened between Stardock CEO Brad Wardell and original Star Control creators Fred Ford and Paul Reiche III. It's all explained in this blog post from Fred and Paul.

Here are some choice quotes from the announcement:

    Quote

"Before I start talking about settling our legal conflict, I'd like to talk about bees." The conversation about bees, honey, mead, and bee stings went on for quite a while before we moved on to the talking about the case. Our perspective was this: we don't like fighting, but we love creating, so can we step waaay outside the box and settle our dispute through positive, creative actions rather than continuing to beat each other up?

    Quote

There is a weird paragraph in the agreement that involves bees. Seriously — no kidding. Brad Wardell is giving Fred and Paul honey from his hives and Paul is giving Brad some bottles of his homemade mead. Brad will also be giving Paul advice in how not to be stung. The lawyers thought this was pretty dang crazy. This goes to show you can find common ground in the strangest (and most delicious) of places.

Such a wholesome story. To see a detailed history of their grievances and how they came to a settlement, it's all laid out in this excellent Ars Technica post.

  5. MobyGames have declined my proposal of mutual linking - not citing any reasons.

I don't really see much value in linking to them, they don't really provide any useful information for PC gamers - Wikipedia has much more useful information. I would prefer to dedicate resources to more compatible websites, e.g. I was looking at ProtonDB.

Here's the announcement from the developer Ys Net:

    Quote

We are happy to announce that Shenmue III for PC will be will be an Epic Games Store exclusive. Development for Shenmue III has been moving forward using Unreal Engine and the support we have received from Epic has been excellent. But most importantly, in looking for the most enjoyable experience on PC, it was decided together with Deep Silver after much discussion that the Epic Games Store would be the best distribution platform option.

The Kickstarter backers, many of whom expected a Steam release, are understandably upset - the unfurling backer comments are revealing:

    Quote

I'm getting a refund for my 500 dollars.

    Quote

Yep, if this game is going to Epic's Game Store, then I want my $300 back!

    Quote

I'm gonna attempt to be very polite here. I want a refund. I backed for a steam key. You're not gonna deliver that, like you promised in the KS itself. So give me back the money I pledged. Otherwise I'll get it as a chargeback through my bank and you can deal with them instead.

    Quote

GIVE ME MY "Physical copy of Shenmue 3 in an exclusive, backer-only case (PC only)." AND NEVER CALL ME AGAIN

    Quote

"Tier: Digital Copy for PC or PS4 (Kickstarter) ($29)
    • What digital version of Shenmue III would you like?: Steam"
Odd spelling of "haha screw you Unreal Store" you have there, Ys.

When the game does get released make sure to check out our up to date fixes article.

  7. Metro-Exodus-MS-Store-01-Header-2060x869.jpg

With the announcement of Metro Exodus on Microsoft Store excited you, then it might be because Metro has been broken free from its exclusivity from the Epic Games Store. It also helps that it's available for the princely sum of $1, contained within a 1 month trial in the newly branded Xbox Game Pass for PC.

This is where the good news ends. Even though Metro Exodus was released 4 entire months ago, its new release on the Microsoft Store reminds us more of rushed console port than a smooth launch you'd be expecting. It's a harsh reminder of the problems gamers faced with Games For Windows Live back in 2007. More painful is the realisation that many problems are probably the result of the restrictive Universal Windows Platform (UWP) that Microsoft Store applications must be contained within.

Firstly - not being able to install the damn thing - threads mention many people cannot install the game, giving error message 0x80070005 even with the above updates both installed. Make sure to install the latest Xbox beta and make sure to update to Windows version 1903 (the May update), then you'll need to buy the game or subscribe to Xbox Game Pass for PC. Now this does not guarantee it'll work - in fact it hasn't been installable on one of my PCs and the issue still isn't fixed.

If you are one of the lucky people who can 'play' the game, you're likely to encounter one or all of the below issues:

    • Game won't save - thread thread thread - even this poor chap losing 3 hours progress
    • Settings won't save (e.g. resolution) - thread
    • Config and save files are very hard to locate and edit - thread
    • Cannot switch to DX11 despite it being a graphics option - thread
    • After first cutscene, can't login to Xbox Live - thread thread (real GFWL flashbacks here)

My current working theory is that porting Metro Exodus to UWP has caused all sorts of issues with permissions, where normally the user files of the game are easily accessible, e.g.

    %AppData%\Saved Games\metro exodus\<user-id>\user.cfg

but are now contained within the locked down UWP format which is unwritable for whatever reason:

    %AppData%\Local\Packages\DeepSilver.ProjectWindfall_hmv7qcest37me\SystemAppData\wgs\....someuniqueusernumber\

Another issue UWP may be causing is the 'blurry screen' as if the game is being rendered under a much lower resolution. This may be due to the fact that UWP forces borderless fullscreen windowed mode stretching the default 720p image. This combined with the fact that resolution changes aren't saving correctly are causing a lot of confusion. Apparently alt+tabbing will solve the issue but it's not a great first impression.

It's just conjecture at this point but it's a bad sign for future 3rd party AAA UWP games that are bound to come in droves to sign up for the Xbox Game Pass money pot.

For more up to date issues, the Metro Exodus wiki page will contain more up to date fixes. Many thanks to contributor Anthraksi for bringing the issue to our attention.

  8. Another confirmation of save game and setting save issues:

    Quote

The Windows Store Version of Metro Exodus doesn't create Save Game Folder

The Game doesn't create a Save Game Folder (C:\Users(Your name)\Saved Games\metro exodus). Game progress and settings (graphics etc) are not being saved. I can start the game and change settings temporarily, but after closing the game everything is set to default and the progress is gone.

    What I did:

I installed the new Version of the XBox App (Including Win 10 Version 1903)

I downloaded Metro Exodus via the App and installed it on a different drive (D:) than my system is on (C:).

    I started the game

Unfortunately I can't install the game on 😄 because it requires over 50 GB. Also the installation Folder on 😧 is just a big archive without any user-access at all (I assume because of copyright protection of the Windows Store)

What I tried (without a solution):

Deleting the game via the Xbox App and downloading it again

    Starting the App as Admin

Downloading another Metro Exodus profile and trying to get the game run with these settings / savegames

  9. 17 minutes ago, Anthraksi said:

Well as we discussed on Discord, the .ini files can be found, but they are in a weird form (thanks for the link!): https://old.reddit.com/r/metro/comments/byvqm0/win_store_version_configuration_and_save_location/

And I managed to get the graphics settings to save after a couple of tries, no idea why they didnt save on the first two tries.

But yes, even so when the resolution is set to native (3440x1440) in the config file and in-game, the game still renders itself with a smaller resolution which results in a very blurry image. Since the game uses UWP and all of their apps are ran in borderless windowed, the game does techincally run in a window that is sized at 3440x1440, but it does not render itself in that unless I alt+tab in and out.

This looks like a common issue, check this reviewer who can't get 4K working correctly:

    metroreview.png

Also another user is reporting crashing.

  10. That's shocking! So if I am correct it summarising:

    • Metro Exodus UWP (Microsoft Store) keeps defaulting to 1280x720 even if you have a larger screen - resolution can temporarily fixed it by alt-tabbing in and out
    • No other graphics settings can be changed, they revert back
    • The .ini files in AppData\Local\Packages\DeepSilver.ProjectWindfall\ are locked
    • Even if you take ownership the ini files are encrypted

I'm trying to install the game but it's giving me an error message:

    metro.png

Looks like other people may be experiencing the issue as well. However I've checked that I'm using version 1903 of WIndows, and I've installed the new Xbox app and subscribed to Xbox Game Pass for PC Games.

Doom Remake 4 was one of many fan attempts to bring Doom into the modern age. However, the law is the law, and Zenimax has threatened the creator with this scary-looking legal letter:

    Quote

Re: Unauthorized Use by ZeniMax Media Inc Intellectual Property

Dear Mr. Vasily: I am writing on behalf of ZeniMax Media Inc.

We have discovered your "Doom Remake 4" game and reviewed the related website, social media pages, and public statements regarding your intent to develop a reboot of the Doom (1993) videogame. Notwithstanding your affection and enthusiasm for the Doom franchise and the original Doom game, we must object to any unlicensed use of ZeniMax Media Inc property. Your current use of Doom IP on its website and social media pages is without our authorization and is infringing. You must take immediate steps to remove all uses of ZeniMax Media Inc intellectual property, including DOOM copyrights, trademarks, characters, artwork, images, and logos and desist from any further use.

ZeniMax Media Inc is the exclusive owner of all intellectual property rights in and to the DOOM franchise. ZeniMax Media Inc does not permit its names, characters, logos, copyrights and/or trademarks to be used without authorization.

Please provide written confirmation by June 20, 2019 that you (i) have removed all ZeniMax Media Inc intellectual property from related websites and social media pages, (ii) will cease all development of the Doom reboot and will destroy all code and materials related to that project, and (iii) will not use any ZeniMax Media Inc intellectual property in the development of any future videogames.

This letter is not intended to be a full recitation of ZeniMax Media Inc's rights or remedies, nor be a waiver of any such rights and remedies, all of which are expressly reserved.

    Very Truly Yours,

    John T. Dorne
    Deputy Chief Counsel

Creator vasyan777 response was to wipe the ModDB page, saying this:
"I announce our shutdown of the Doom Remake 4 page. It's with a great sadness that I'm posting today; I recently received a letter from ZeniMax Media Inc to end production on Doom Remake 4. After a few days, I've exhausted my options to keep it afloat; we knew this day was a possibility. I've talked to legal console, and they stated that there would be a high chance of us winning the argument, since this is a mod, but the legal fight would take most likely a year(s) and cost around 100k. The page has been already wiped"

It's a sad day to see fan projects get wiped out by bigger fish. However it was alwas on the cards - we've always seen corporations defend their interests against any unauthorised use of their copyrighted and trademarked materials.

    What was Doom Remake 4?

Description from the ModDB page: "Have you ever dreamed about seeing DOOM in HD or with modern feel? Well today you are lucky, Doom Remake 4 is basically a compilation of mods that make it look more polished and aesthetic. It brings you: High Resolution Textures with PBR materials, 3D models of every object and enemy, New HUD (modified DoomVisor), Brutal mods with plenty of blood and gibs."

Screenshots don't do it justice but videos like these show how visceral Doom can feel with modern graphics:

Whilst the mod pages have been totally wiped, you can still see some of the information online in Google's cache, including the original description:

    Quote

The remastered version adds fresh features, like High Definition Textures with PBR materials, Dynamic Lights, shaders and postprocessing effects. The new physically-based rendering (PBR) brings a new stage of realism by allowing the light rays to interact with the given surface matter to the textures, for example the environment made of metal realistically shines as it would do in real life. All the new 3D models are professionlly made and replace every single flat boring obsolete 2D sprite. Doom Remake 4 also adds more brutality into the game by allowing the player to disassemble corpses of the dead enemies. For fans of the Doom series everywhere, remastered version is a glorious moment of triumph, where the passion of the fans triumphed over the cash-driven realities of the gaming industry to breathe new life into an old classic.

As remakes go, Doom Remake 4 stays almost totally true to its roots as an old-school shooter in that there is no upgrade system or collectibles to speak of; only raw action and quick thinking. Like most 90's-era first-person shooters, the core loop of gameplay revolves around the player being given an arsenal of increasingly destructive and weird weaponry while being pitted against ever-more difficult enemy encounters and ambushes, forcing them to employ their wits and cool to stay alive under fire. Regarding the guns, almost nothing has changed save for stylish 3D models with high texture definition. All the old fan favorites are present, including the Plasmagun, the Rocket Launcher, and the BFG9000.

Doom Remake 4 is a good mod, not just for long-time fans, but for new ones too. It's a testament of how far we've come, and how much further we still have to go in the field of mod-making. So grab your helmet and get it on ModDB! It's available for free! The mod works as stand-alone mod and is compatible with any custom levels both classic and GZDoom based. The original Doom levels are not included in the package, because the license doesn't allow to redistribute them, however the package includes alternative levels from Freedoom Project which can be freely redistributed and in general look better and more detailed than original levels. The original Doom levels can be loaded as well if you copy doom2.wad and doom.wad from your Doom folder into Doom Remake 4 folder.

Sad to see a great looking mod go down. Had ZeniMax not intervened, vasyan777 had every intention of adding more to the game:

How is a game being released April 16, 2020 - more than 10 months away, now the top of Steam and GOG bestselling charts? Definitely a lot of hype caused by a great development studiofantastic trailer and maybe Keanu Reeves had something to do with it.

      gog.png

The best way to support the developers CD Projekt Red is to buy it from GOG.com - the digital storefront they own. They even go on to say this right on the GOG store page - "100% OF YOUR MONEY GOES TO THE CD PROJEKT GROUP" - can't get clearer than that!

      Announcement here: https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2019/06/09/halo-at-e3-2019/

      Quote

The next question we hear a lot is “how much will the MCC PC games cost?” On PC, we’re excited to confirm that each game within MCC will be included with an Xbox Game Pass for PC subscription as they become available. In addition, each title can be purchased individually – Halo: Reach, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2 Anniversary, Halo 3, and Halo 4 will be offered at $9.99USD on both the Microsoft Store and Steam while Halo 3: ODST within MCC (with a current scope of Campaign only), will be available for $4.99USD. Players will have flexibility to purchase any or all the games at any point along the way as they become available.

Pretty much what was expected as the total cost for the MCC will be $55. Or it'll be part of the $1 Xbox Game Pass PC Games trial (normally $4.99 monthly).

It looks terrible. They'll never get every developer to redo every game so a bunch of stuff in your library will have that awful blurred look because the game image doesn't fit right. So far it doesn't look like you can even customize the images.

I make grid images for Steam so this ruins years of work. I'm probably moving over to support GoG Galaxy 2.0 instead if it turns out to be good. At least I know the art can be customized there, and it's not that ridiculously narrow vertical strip aspect ratio.

Yes having portrait images seems silly given that Steam has been pushing for landscape game covers since the beginning. Every single game will need to be updated which will never happen.

Shame about the images you've created - hopefully this isn't the only way we'll be able to view the game library - I wonder how Big Picture will be affected too.
