    This is a great idea. Notes about VirtualStore redirection are now displayed for Windows paths pointing to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, %WINDIR%, and <path-to-game>. Feel free to suggest any improvements to the wording or other path types that need notes.

    Proposal: Restructure articles with 'Overview' to replace Key Points, Essential Improvements, General Information Key points was designed to be a way to add statements that would be quantitatively verifiable and individually moderated easily. It occupies the top of the article and is the first thing visitors read when viewing an article - it implies that this is the headline top information. However it currently suffers from an issue where people fill out lines for the sake of having a line, and includes information that is far from ‘key’ eg {{++}} Game uses 7.1 audio. Or to include {{--}} negative points just to 'balance' out the top of the article, where it is not warranted. Secondly I would like to push PCGW to contain more Wikipedia-like information that is qualitative, with a focus on technical and quality of life information. Back in 2012, I was afraid we wouldn’t have the policies and manpower to correctly moderate large blocks of text. However I think we are in a good position to do this now with a healthy active moderation team. This would also vastly improve its 'SEO' quality and push PCGamingWiki articles from average slot of 11th space on Google to possibly the front page. This will attract visitors and editors and make the entire site more useful. Here's a draft General section example (no 2nd level header), that would go at the top of the page: General information - instead of a long rambling list of everything, we move this under the Infobox. Rename to "Support Resources". Remove things like wikis, official websites - this section should be for things like 'authoritative threads', forums, etc. where users can expect to find answers to technical questions about the game.

    This fixes the following issues with Gothic and Gothic II on Windows 8 and later: Window border visible in fullscreen mode Low frame rate in fullscreen mode Extract anywhere and run install.bat to apply these fixes. Any previous versions are automatically replaced if present. This works by applying the following compatibility fixes to Gothic.exe, Gothic2.exe and GothicMod.exe: ForceSimpleWindow (hides window border) DXPrimaryEmulation -DisableMaxWindowedMode (fixes frame rate isssues) This fix does not remove Gothic's default frame rate cap; refer to its page for a separate fix for that issue. This fix will also work with Gothic Multiplayer (other mods that change the executable might not be affected).

    These patchers created for 2560x1080, 3440x1440 and 32:9 resolutions will remove the black bars from the game and adjust the FOV. Simply choose the archive intended for your resolution, unpack it, then use the patcher to modify the game executable. The solution is not perfect - the FOV compensation results in more FOV at each scene, making some scenes very zoomed-out compared to the original. To achieve the same with a hex edit or help figure out a better FOV solution, have a look at the WSGF thread.

    This tiny patch will unlock the 21:9 aspect ratio in the game menu, allowing to select ultrawide and many other resolutions under "???" for extra FOV. Option 1: Download globalgamemanagers and paste it over the original file in \OuterWilds_Data\ found in the game folder. Option 2: Download the patcher (ow.exe) and use it to patch the original file in that folder.

    Unpack the archive and put the exe in \Octopath_Traveler\Binaries\Win64\ within the game folder, replacing the original. Launch the game and make sure your 21:9 resolution is selected. Tested with the latest Steam version, at 2560x1080.

    This have been on the backburner for a while. I usually just tell users to use /row/developer with an appropriate second parameter instead: {{Infobox game/row/developer|My Famous Game Studio|Microsoft Store}} The porter row is currently tied to what PCGW sees as OSes, and trying to fit in /platform “ports”/ on that row is probably going to be a headache. It also isn’t as relevant information since the work done is typically far less minor (usually just involves replacing one library for another, or hooking up calls to replacement calls, etc). I recommend we simply formalize the use of the developer row in the few cases where another studio worked on one of the platform releases.

    In the area under the game cover art there are links to Wikipedia, SteamDB, Wine... and other stuff. I recommend to add MobyGames there too, since Wikipedia is a general online encyclopedia and MobyGame is basically an online encyclopedia for video games and people often already add the links to it in the general info section. Many old obscure and less known games don't have a Wikipedia page, but I have yet to find an old game without a MobyGames page.

    Thank you Rose! It worked perfectly. Really appreciate you creating this and making it available to the community! Edit: I should add that I'm using it for 3440x1440 and there's not screen cutoff that I can tell. Everything appears to be scaled perfectly.

    E3 2019 Megathread

    Microsoft is running the MixPot promotion again: watch the Xbox E3 stream on Mixer (from the Mixer Xbox channel or through the app) and sign in with a Microsoft account to get free games/DLC. See the Xbox MixPot FAQ for details. Last time it was only games/DLC for consoles, but since they will be talking about the PC this time there might be some PC goodies.

    Proposal: Metacritic or equivalent

    Individual reviewers might write reviews with a political stance, however aggregators like Metacritic and Opencritic normally contain a balance of different opinions. PCGamingWiki is politically neutral, however this shouldn't stop us from balancing this with new features and to make a better resource for PC gamers. For example Wikipedia PC game articles including a Reception section citing reviews or review aggregators doesn't necessarily compromise its neutrality. Users can choose to ignore review scores on this website if necessary. I am open to Metacritic, OpenCritic and any others. However Metacritic has a lot of old games where OpenCritic doesn't. I am also open to Steam reviews however the issue becomes how to keep these up to date. If we solely plan to keep this limited to "alternative sources" of obtaining access to games right now, then I can whip up an extension to the Availability template, and add notes to boot.     The existence of this template and the attempt to now track Game Pass titles (a subscription service that adds and removes games in its catalog every now and then) have made me question whether we shouldn't opt for a more generic template instead that's designed to be extended for whatever supplementary feature might come up. Something like this basically: {{Store features | microsoft store game pass = true | microsoft store play anywhere = true | origin access = | origin access premier = true }} which would then create a list like this: {{ii}} Included in Xbox Game Pass subscription service. {{ii}} Xbox Play Anywhere title; purchase it on either Microsoft Store on Windows 10 or Xbox, and receive copies for both platforms. {{ii}} Included in Origin Access Premier subscription service. If this was then used below the availability row, you'd have an easy placement where the list could grow naturally as features was determined as necessary to add to the template. Edit: The obvious negative downside of this is that it wouldn't allow us to include it in the Availability table unless we redesigned that entirely and added new parameters to it.

    References should go in the "direct3d notes" field, and not the "direct3d versions" field, of the API template. The "direct3d notes" field is limited to only supported values, as anything else will screw up the backend connections. Only remove listings if you've actually confirmed that they do not support DirectX 12 on your own, or you find a concrete source mentioning that it doesn't. PCGW generally assumes that edits are accurate despite a lack of reference, so to remove ones that are "suspicious" you'll have to find a concrete source confirming the suspicions. Feel free to add {{cn}} in the notes field to flag that a citation is needed, though.

    TL;DR The DirectInputFpxFix fixes an input related FPS drop/slowdown problem that occurs in FEAR, its expansions, Condemned: Criminal Origins and other games. It is easy to install and does not require manual disabling of HID devices. Quick start guide: Extract the file dinput8.dll to the folder containing the executable of the game. For example: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\FEAR Ultimate Shooter Edition" Start the game like you would normally, for example directly through Steam or GOG Galaxy. Features The DirectInputFpsFix fixes a bug that causes the FPS to severely drop after a few minutes of play. This problem is probably most widely known in regards to the game FEAR and often occurs in conjunction with the usage of Logitech devices. However, the problem also crops up in other games using the same engine, such as the FEAR expansions or Condemned: Criminal Origins and with non-Logitech hardware configurations. A similar problem has also been reported to occur in other titles, like Prototype. Although this issue can often be fixed by disabling most/all HID-Devices in the device manager, it is bothersome to do so and lately some people reported that that solution does not even work at all anymore, especially on machines running Windows 10. Instructions Supported Games The fix is agnostic towards the game that uses it and should therefore work with all versions of a supported game, including the Steam, GOG and retail versions. Confirmed:FEAR and its expansions Condemned: Criminal Origins [*]Supposedly: Prototype Kane & Lynch: Dead Men Feel free to provide feedback if the DLL works on other games as well. Install The fix does not make any permanent changes to the game or to Windows and can easily be removed. Extract the file dinput8.dll to the folder containing the executable of the game. For example: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\FEAR Ultimate Shooter Edition"* Start the game like you would normally, for example directly through Steam or GOG Galaxy. *Note that for the FEAR expansions the fix also has to be installed into the corresponding sub-folder of the game Uninstall Rename or remove the dinput8.dll from the folder of the game. Known Issues There are currently no known issues with the fix. Additional Information Antivirus Software Since this mod consists of an executable DLL file that uses "hacking techniques" such as injection and hooking, it could be classified as malicious by antivirus software. In that case, it might be necessary to add an exception rule to the scanner. If you lack the trust in random people on the internet -- and I would not blame you -- feel free to use a meta online virus scanner like VirusTotal to verify the file. Loading Other Fixes/Mods/Injectors To increase the compatibility with other mods or injectors that are using a wrapper DLL, this fix offers two methods for remote loading of additional files. Note that there might still be compatibility issues between the different fixes, mods or injectors that have nothing to do with the loading process. File method: The mod will load another dinput8.dll automatically if it has the name dinput8.dll. Just rename the DLL you want to load accordingly. Using this method will lead to an error if the renamed DLL is not itself a dinput8.dll. Folder method: The mod will also automatically load all DLLs regardless of their names in a dinput8 sub-directory. Just create a corresponding folder in the install directory of the mod. This is the only way to load multiple (conflicting) files. How This Works The fix is implemented using a common technique known as DLL hooking. User input in games like FEAR can be realized via DirectInput, an API by Microsoft for interacting with HID-Devices. The library is ancient and should no longer be used today, because there are other ways to get mouse and keyboard input, especially for games. The FPS drops happen because the thread that runs DirectInput massively slows down after a while (as can be seen in tools like ProcessExplorer). If an application uses a library like DirectInput, it needs a so-called DLL (dynamic-link library) where the functionality of the library is stored. In many cases, especially for libraries provided by Microsoft, these DLLs usually reside in the Windows folder. However, there is an order of how an application searches for the DLLs it needs. Since the DLL of the fix gets copied into the main folder of the application and has the same name of a DLL needed by the game (the one of DirectInput), it gets loaded instead of the one in the Windows folder. This means that all calls to DirectInput go through the Hook-DLL and can either be directed to the original DLL in the Windows folder or changed as necessary. This also allows some insight in how exactly the library is used by the game. It turned out that some games not only unnecessarily register all HID-devices, they also call several functions every frame that usually only should be called once during initialization. The latter seems to apply only to devices that are not keyboards or mice. This eventually leads to circumstances where a lot of time is spent opening and closing device connections. The fix changes the DirectInput initialization in such a way that only keyboard and pointer devices get registered.     About This patch is intended to solve certain issues that occur on modern systems, related to game's usage of ancient DirectX APIs. It also enables the game to run via dgVoodoo DirectX wrapper. The main goal of this patch was to get the game running properly on all machines I have at home, which have graphics cards of all popular vendors (NVIDIA, AMD and Intel) and running Windows 10. The following changes have been implemented: Pass DDCREATE_EMULATIONONLY for DirectDraw objects used for intro cinematics, prevents the Fatal error message on startup or black screen during cinematics, depending on graphics drivers. Call SetAppCompatData(12, 0) in ddraw.dll to disable maximized windowed mode on Windows 8 and above, allows the game to run in real fullscreen mode on those systems and restores ability to change gamma with F2 and F3 keys. Delay execution of DllMain logic of rendering libraries to the point when the LoadLibrary call returns (startup hang prevention and dgVoodoo compatibility). Included registry fix which disables Windows' interfering with the game, launcher. This interference can make the game crash or not start when ran through launcher under certain circumstances. Installation Files in this archive were tested with retail version of the game, they may work with other versions, just make sure neither sft8lib.dll, D3D6Lib.dll or D3D7Lib.dll are present in the root game folder, the patch bundles updated ones in data\Stealth\Render and having the old ones in the root folder overriding the new ones is a recipe for disaster. It's also recommended to setup the game to use dgVoodoo 2 wrapper for the best experience, though it's not mandatory. Extract the contents of Soulbringer folder into your own, overwriting original files. Apply Disable_Soulbringer_Compat_Fixes.reg registry fix which takes care of launcher issues. This may not take effect until you right-click on Soulbringer.exe, go to compatibility tab and click OK to cause Windows to register new settings. If you're not going to use dgVoodoo with the game, you should set Reduced color mode (8-bit) on all game executables' Compatibility tab (Soulbringer.exe, SoulbringeVC.exe, SoulbringeVCnoeax.exe), it won't actually downgrade the colors, but it allows for rendering modes enumeration to work properly. This is only needed on Windows 8 and above. If you want software mode to not have garbled colors without dgVoodoo, apply Soulbringer_Palette_Fix_x86.reg (32-bit Windows) or Soulbringer_Palette_Fix_x64.reg (64-bit Windows). Note that the software mode doesn't work on Windows 8 and above without dgVoodoo. Launch Soulbringer, click Video, make sure any DX6 option is selected then choose the desired game resolution. The ones with 4:3 aspect ratio are the best given that game can't deal with wider aspect ratios. Other modes can work, but run too fast without forcing VSYNC (60 Hz) or capping frame-rate to 60 FPS. Click Advanced and make sure the EAX option is disabled unless you're sure you have a working setup that supports running DirectSound3D games with EAX effects and EAX Unified is installed. Additional notes There is a strange issue with game on Windows 8 and above, it doesn't pick up on all rendering modes unless Reduced color mode (8-bit) is selected from its Compatibility tab under Properties. When run for the very first time, it works though. It always works properly when run through dgVoodoo. Contrary to what the game ReadMe says, DX6 mode actually seems to run faster than DX7 and doesn't have the problem activating VSYNC to keep the FPS at 60. Running too fast makes the game glitchy. The downside, text is blurry, needs some sort of fix related to texel alignment, ATI specific fix is called Altertnate Pixel Centers, PixelCenter (31 00 00 00) setting in registry, no idea how to set it on application basis on today's drivers, irrevelant solution for NVIDIA and Intel, doesn't work with dgVoodoo neither. Future version of dgVoodoo may have a fix for that. With recent NVIDIA drivers, without using dgVoodoo, game may hang when tabbing out, press CTRL + ALT + DEL, then ESC to get to the desktop.
