Steamworks DRM in articles

Recommended Posts

Copy pasting files on another PC to test if it works is kind of brute forcing any reasoning.. still I guess it's the most comprehensive thing one could hope to do.

And it would avoid really unfortunate "false negatives" like Mass Effect 2.

For as much as .par files are usually only included in games released after ~mid 2011 (when the platform changed name from EADM/Store to Origin), it seems some titles have been updated.

Though, as the name hints, .pars are just parameter files. They aren't drm (steam.dll) by itself. You can open them with ME3Explorer.

You usually just need protection id to check most of DRMs (albeit some are missed)

I found out that even Mirror's Edge doesn't apparently use DRM on Origin, or there is no .par file that is Origin's equivalent to steam.dll. I'll trying moving the files to another computer, maybe it really is DRM-free.

Now you can grab the entire Syberia series from Steam for 3€, but I don't necessarily want to buy if Steamworks DRM is used: http://store.steampowered.com/sub/8224/

Both games in that bundle requires Steam.

That's the method I use to check DRM, works reliably, as opposed to Sandboxie. (I load the games over a network mounted drive though)

Can Steamworks DRM be removed by users, or only circumvented by emulating Steam?

Depending on the amount of Steamworks stuff a game use, yes.

Steamless does not remove the usage of steam_api.dll from any game that makes use of it.

I  found that tool just recently, can you tell me how it is used? I could test with a few games.

No matter how hard I try I can't get a crack for Dark Souls: http://gamecopyworld.eu/games/pc_dark_souls.shtml#Dark%20Souls%20v1.2%20[MULTI9]%20Fixed%20Files%203

Please PM me if you have the files.

EDIT: Finally managed to download the file (refreshing the page helps), but a crack released on 16-02-2015 doesn't work and the game gives an error when launched.

It opens just fine here for the records.

Though... mhh, what's the problem with steam drm that you need to use a crack in the first place?

Do you always get the download page on GCW after clicking "continue"?

I want to use crack to disable online features, I'm not sure if blocking the game in firewall is enough.

And why do you need to disable online features in the first place?

And.. whatever the answer, if it's a GFWL game, use XLiveless. If it's about steamworks version, put steam offline?

I do not use adblocking software, so I'm assuming the continue button is put there to forward you to advertisement site to get some ad money from you even with adblock.

Site works just fine without adblock so either you need to whitelist or block the adblocker blocker.

It's possible to download Steam games without using the Steam client. Here's one solution: https://github.com/SteamRE/DepotDownloader. I wouldn't consider the Steam client DRM.

Doesn't SteamCMD, an official CLI tool by Valve work as well?

Still, not unlike Steam, they are additional software required to obtain the game. They could not be considered DRM if the game doesn't require them to run, but you still need to install them in the first place.

If I may, I think that it should be mentioned in the "Availability" paragraph, "Notes" column, if the game can actually be played without Steam in the background. Also, this may change with a future update, in this case it's easy to edit.

Oh, and this doesn't apply only to Steam. There are classic ubisoft games on uplay that doesn't require the client to run.

I know that, as an avid pcgamingwiki user (I read it for every game I want to buy), I would benefit of such information. It would be more handier than the famous big list of "DRM-free" Steam games. Will you consider to allow it?
